| Character
Name: Mary Lee |
| Aliases:
Mary Chan, Wary Wang, Mary White, and Mary Black, and most recently
since absconding to the United States, Mary Smith |
| Age:
69 |
| Ethnicity:
Chinese |
| Sex:
Female |
| Health
Condition: Very healthy, robust. |
| Sexual
Orientation? Heterosexual, but Mary isn’t interested in sex
at all, only power and controlling everyone around her. |
| Does
she have a lot of friends? She knows absolutely everyone, and some
people know her as Mary Lee, and some people know her as Mary Smith. She’s
sneaky like that. Everywhere she goes, she seems to make new friends, and
she knows all the most important people in the greater Los Angeles Chinese
community. But once people get to know her, they fear her more than they
love her, as she always finds a way to make them obligated to her somehow. |
|
Married? Single?
Exes? Mary is the widow of Charlie Tang Chiu Wei (A.K.A. Uncle
Charlie), who was known throughout Hong Kong as Uncle Charlie. Her late
husband was the Cho-kun (Godfather) of the Black Dragon Triad Society,
but Mary was powerful in her own rite. In some ways, even more so than
he was, as she exhibited enormous sway upon her husband, and was the one
who convinced him to move the family to Jakarta when the British handed
Hong Kong over to the Chinese to avoid persecution by the PRC. After her
husband was assassinated in Jakarta by his business associate Wu Peng,Mary
absconded with the whole family Los Angeles under her maiden name of Lee.
She married the ailing and crippled Phil Smith for an easy path to a green
card and U.S. citizenship, but keeps his ex-wife stashed in a condo, a
block away from them. It’s a strange situation, considering the
way she incessantly criticizes Melissa for living unmarried with a younger
man who could leave her at any moment.
|
| What
she does and why? Mary is an investor of sorts, meaning that she
finds ways to loan disadvantaged people money at exorbitant interest. Or
she buys the debts of people who are into hock to the Tongs or the Triads,
and brings them into her service. She finds ways to take over people’s
businesses, or to become a silent partner, but she does it all with charm
and grace. When you are at your most time of need and when all other backs
have turned on you, Mary Lee will appear. She also likes to gamble, and
rarely if ever loses. She loves Mah Jong, and knows how to play numerous
card games like Pai Gow poker, and baccarat, with the best of them. |
| What
are her goals? Mary wants nothing less than the standard of living
she was accustomed to before her husband was assassinated and their assets
frozen. She’d managed to keep enough cash to live quietly, but she
doesn’t want to live quietly. She was used to people being at her
beck and call, 24/7, but since coming to the U.S. she’d had to live
like middle class people, and she didn’t like the way her oldest daughter’s
American boyfriend behaved around her. So she’s made some calls back
home, and is on her way to bringing some standards back into her life. |
